Welcoming Baby Cruz | The Beaton Family
There are few things more meaningful than being invited into a family’s life again and again, through every milestone and every new season. The Beaton family has been one of those constants for me over the years. I’ve photographed their engagement, their wedding, their boys, and each of their newborn sessions. Being there to meet their third baby, Cruz, felt like coming full circle in the best way.
This was our second Fresh 48 session together, and it took place at High River Hospital while Cruz was still less than 24 hours old. There’s something incredibly special about photographing a baby so new—those tiny stretches, the soft sounds, and the way time feels slower in a hospital room than anywhere else. Everything is quiet, gentle, and full of awe.
One of the sweetest moments of the day happened when Cruz’s big brothers, Cooper and Cohen, arrived to meet him for the first time. Their grandparents brought them, so we were able to capture those early introductions as a family. Cooper’s proud smile, Cohen’s curiosity, and the way they hovered close to their new baby brother were moments you simply can’t recreate later. Fresh 48 sessions are all about these honest, unscripted pieces of a family’s story.
Having Grandma and Grandpa there added even more meaning. The way they looked at their newest grandson brought a quiet tenderness to the session. These are the kinds of photographs that become treasures decades down the road.
The room was bright with soft morning light, making it perfect for a relaxed, documentary-style session. No props, no setups—just the Beaton family exactly as they were in those first hours with Cruz. It’s this natural approach that makes Fresh 48 photography so powerful. Everything is real and unrepeatable.
Being invited to capture yet another chapter in the Beaton family’s story is something I don’t take lightly. Watching their family grow, photographing each of their boys as newborns, and documenting so many milestones over the years has been an honour. These are the families that remind me why I do what I do.
Cruz’s Fresh 48 session was full of love, connection, and the quiet magic of those very first hours. I’m grateful I was able to be there, and thrilled to help them hold onto these memories forever.
